Knights Hold Inaugural July 4th Fundraiser

Council 10567 held a very successful "Boston Butts" sale during the July 4th weekend. It was the first time the Knights attempted this type of fundraiser and it was a sellout. The Council targeted 50 as the goal to sell and all 50 were sold. But selling was the easy part. Starting on Friday, the Knights used all night Friday and part of the day Saturday to accomplish the task of cooking the meat. Smokers were donated by Lois Bradley and John Duchock and several were involved in the effort. Led by chairperson Mike Muro, work was done by John Duchock, Dale Blanchard, Charles Blanchard, Roger Click, Chris Muro, Shawn Allen and John Sokira. Jerry Higginbotham also went to Lois Bradley's house to retrieve the smoker and transport it to St. Patrick. Special thanks to all who helped, especially to John Duchock, who provided and cooked the shrimp/beef/vegetable kabobs for the work crew.

Knights of Columbus Council 10567 held a service day on Saturday, April 22 at the historic Fraternal Cemetery in Pratt City. Some 64 people worked to remove brush, trees, weeds and grass from around the monuments, which date back to the 1880s. The service day was led by Don, Meadows, Gaeton Conte and Rob Smith. The trio planned, organized and developed a plan that maximized manpower and equipment. the result was that a cemetery that had become a sad sight now looks like a cemetery should look. As Father Gray Bean says, "We honor these people by coming to this place, by taking care of this place."

Hueytown Elementary Work Day

In May 2005, Council 10567 volunteered to help parishioner and Hueytown Elementary School teacher Stephanie Allen move from one classroom to another. Mrs. Allen has taught kindergarten since her graduation from the University of Alabama two years ago but is moving to first grade next fall. Volunteering to help were Father Gray Bean, Gaeton Conte, Joseph Conte and Louis J. Muro. After a hearty breakfast at Minor Cafe, the crew headed to Hueytown and spent the next few hours hauling boxes and miscellaneous items from one end of the school to the other. Mrs. Allen is the wife of Knight Shawn Allen and the daughter of Knight Louis J. Muro. "All of the other teachers were jealous of my quick and speedy work crew," Mrs. Allen said. "It was great how quickly it got done and it was a load off my mind -- believe me! I was humbled and very appreciative of all the Knights who came to help, especially Father Gray Bean. It meant a lot to me that Father Bean took the time out of his busy schedule to come and help me."

Lenten Day of Service 2005

More than 60 parishioners gathered at St. Patrick on Saturday, February 12, 2005 for the 4th Annual Lenten Day of Service, a day designed for church members to provide unselfish service to the parish through various work projects. Council 10567 organized the service day, which was started in 2002 by the St. Patrick Family Life Committee. Parishioner and Council member Rob Smith planned the specifics, lining up volunteers, determining the projects to be completed, and supervising the completion of those projects. Father Gray Bean said, “I was amazed that the people of St. Patrick gave more than 600 man hours of labor in ONE DAY! This shows a great love for Christ and His Church as expressed through our local parish. Special care was taken in the church and the chapel, since these are the places where the Holy Mass is celebrated. For me, the whole day was one of joy, humor and love (not to mention hard work--I took Advil that night!). I think it was a great day!” Preparations began on Friday when Knights began cooking the pork roasts for the service day’s barbecue lunch. The workers gathered in the Church Hall at 8:30 for coffee and doughnuts. After an opening prayer, parishioners were divided into separate work groups, with each work group under the direction of a team leader. Various projects were completed in the Church, the Rev. Raymond J. Murrin Family Life Center, the St. Joseph Hall, the Convent, and outside on the Church grounds. The service day concluded with Mass Saturday night.
