The Foundation for Liturgical Music sponsored the twelvth year of the Music Ministry Series on June 26 - 29, 2008 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. Being one of the Board Members for FLM, my days (and nights) were very busy with planning and preparing, but I was able to sit-in on a couple of sessions that gave new fire to my musical passion, Song Writing and Singing.
Thursday evening, the first day of the session, the Taize prayer service took place to conclude the day. The songs of Taize are so peaceful and reflective alone, but add cello, violin, guitars and some of the finest voices blending in SATB parts and you leave the prayer area feeling relaxed and focused.
Morning Prayer and a well prepared keynote by Sarah Hart, began Friday's routine. Anyone who knows me, knows that I was elated that Sarah was part of the Faculty this year. I attended her first session, Contemporary Composition. She gave the group of a 10 attendees some great songwriting basics and then we composed our own song "Cast Your Burdens" which was presented at the Particpant's Concert held on the final day of the workshop. The second Composition Class that afternoon also wrote a song and I'll let one of the other attendees tell you about that one.
On Saturday, I was able to break free for a bit to attend a Cantor Session led by Kate Cuddy. Each particpant selected a Psalm to present and then had time to receive affirmation on their delivery from their peers, leaving Kate to make any suggested improvements.
