Knights of Columbus Council 10567 announced the recipients of its yearly awards on Sunday, July 19.

Past Grand Knight Mike Muro received the Knight of the Year Award; Wayne and Margaret Wellborn received the Family of the Year; and Gregory Skocik was honored as the recipient of the prestigious Colombo Service Award.

The awards were handed out by Grand Knight Clay Reece, who also recognized this year's recipients of the Louis N. Muro Memorial Scholarship: Haylee Fadlevich and Justin Richerzhagen.

The Louis N. Muro Memorial Scholarship was started in 1995 and named in honor of Louis N. Muro, the Council 10567 Charter Grand Knight. This year Haylee Fadlevich and Justin Richerzhagen became the 31st and 32nd recipients of this scholarship.

Haylee is the daughter of Martin and Gena Fadlevich and a recent graduate of Sumiton Christian High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and a 4.0 student. Justin is the son of Joey and Cecilia Richerzhagen. A graduate of Minor High School, Justin is a standout musician who is part of the "Absolute Presence" musical group at St. Patrick. Both Haylee and Justin will attend UAB this fall.

Wayne and Margaret Wellborn are a shining example of a true Catholic family. They were married soon after Wayne got out of the U.S. Navy and have been married 47 years. They have one son, Todd, and two daughters Maureen and Lori, and 5 grandchildren.

Like many of us, Margaret's roots are in Europe. Her maiden name is Furmanski and she is the daughter of a Polish immigrant. Her father worked for 51 years at U. S. Steel. She grew up a Catholic, attending St. Anthony and John Carroll High School. Wayne and Margaret have been attending St. Stanislaus since September 1969, more than 41 years.

Wayne became a Knight of Columbus May 11, 2005. He advanced to 2nd and 3rd degree at first opportunity and soon became a 4th Degree Knight. It was Wayne's example and encouragement that led his son Todd and his grandsons Ryan and Tyler to also become Knights of Columbus. Ryan is now a 4th Degree Knight and Todd and Tyler have already become 3rd Degree Knights.

Knight of the Year Mike Muro has served two terms as Grand Knight and has also served as Faithful Navigator of Assembly 2399. Mike has many great qualities and he has been a leader in Council 10567 and St. Patrick parish for many, many years. But, beyond his two terms as Grand Knight and his great leadership in church activities, Mike is a person with great passion for his Knights of Columbus Council and for St. Patrick. He cares. He cares deeply about his fellow Knights and he cares about his parish.

Council 10567 had one of its greatest years this past year and that is due to the leadership of Mike Muro. He is a friend to all at St. Patrick.

In 1995, Council 10567 established the annual Colombo Service Award, honoring a St. Patrick parishioner for outstanding service to parish, the diocese and the community over an extended period of years. The award was in honor of Lou Colombo, one of the founding fathers of Council 10567 and a great servant to this Church.

This year's honoree is Gregory Skocik.

A native of Ashland, Pennsylvania, Greg served more than 20 years in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. During his service in the Air Force, Greg served in Vietnam and before he was done received two Air Force Commendation medals; one Meritorious Service medal; one Bronze Star and five Air Force Good Conduct medals. When he retired, Greg had reached the rank of Senior Master Sergeant.

It was during his military service that Greg met Anita Cloutier, a native of Berline, New Hampshire. They have been married for 45 years.

Greg retired from the military and after a few stops a job offer brought him to Fairfield, Alabama. Lifelong Catholics, Greg and Anita were among many who made the journey to St. Patrick via other churches, attending St. Raphael and then St. Mark. A 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, Greg joined the Knights in 1993 and has served the Council as Lecturer. Greg also was an anchor on the Council's First Degree team for many, many years.

Greg and his wife Anita have been very visible members of St. Patrick since its inception.  Greg served as Lector and he and Anita have been actively involved in helping the local Firehouse Shelter for many years.

Council 10567 is proud of to honor all of these great people and we greatly thank our pastor and chaplain, Father Vernon Huguley, for his great support and participation in our Council.
