Some 35 men converged on the Fraternal Cemetery on Saturday, March 31 for the 2nd annual Cemetery Cleanup service project sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 10567.
Under the direction of Grand Knight Rob Smith, Knights and other volunteers used weedeaters, lawn mowers, chain saws and other tools to take on the massive job of clearing growth away from the headstones and monuments in the historic cemetery.
The work day began at 8 a.m. and ended at 4 p.m. an included a short break for lunch. The Fraternal Cemetery, which is located across the street from the former location of St. Catherine church, houses some of the oldest graves in the city of Birmingham. Many of the people buried in these graves are familiar names to Catholic families in the Birmingham area.
Smith said, "I would like to thank all those who volunteered to work and all those who contributed money to get this job done. We used the money to rent equipment and to feed the workers.
