A $100,000 contribution to the Archdiocese of Mobile received from the Knights of Columbus Gulf States Disaster Relief Fund will be applied toward the material and financial restoration of the Catholic schools most seriously impacted by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, according to correspondence between Archbishop Oscar H. Lipscomb and Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson.
The gift to the archdiocese is part of a broader $1.85 million distribution of funds collected from Knights of Columbus councils and individuals both in Alabama and throughout the Order to assist the dioceses along the Gulf Coast most affected by the hurricanes.
In a letter dated Dec. 22, Supreme Knight Anderson stressed the Knights’ continuing commitment “to distribute every penny contributed to the Knights of Columbus Gulf States Disaster Relief Fund to the areas where they are most needed. The fund has collected more than $4.2 million in donations.
In a response dated Dec. 28, Archbishop Lipscomb, a member of Mobile Council 666, wrote, “It was with great joy and gratitude that I received your letter of Dec. 22, and hasten to thank you, our brother Knights and their families and friends who contributed so generously resulted in such a powerful gift.”
His letter continues: “Your check for $100,000 can be easily applied in this archdiocese to schools that have suffered some, but not much material damage. But in other ways, many of our schools, and some of those most at risk extended themselves and ignored their budgets to take in refugee youngsters from the hurri- canes, continue their education without thought to the collection of tuition and other expenses, and even providing school texts and uniforms where that seemed to be appropriate.”
Several hundred student evacuees were placed in Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Mobile following the hurricanes.
Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes of New Orleans also has written a letter thanking the Knights for its generosity in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. His letter is featured in the March edition of Columbia, the monthly magazine of the Knights of Columbus.
